Peter Lorimer last night thumped home a hat-trick to win a West Riding Senior Cup tie for Leeds United. Halifax shook Leeds by grabbing a twenty-fourth minute lead but within sixty seconds of the breakthrough Lorimer was on target. He nipped onto a back pass to score powerfully from sixteen yards then six minutes before the interval he put the holders ahead. Roche had done marvellously well to turn aside Andy Watson's header, but left Lorimer with a simple knock-in goal from five yards. Lorimer, thirty-eight in December, saved his best goal for the 1,469 crowd until just before the end. With twelve minutes left, he controlled a clearance which squirted out of the Halifax penalty area and banged the ball in off the far post from twenty yards. The new Halifax side, given the lead with a smartly worked goal by Gallagher's header, gave Leeds several anxious moments in the second half. But with Sheridan and Sellars finding their touch Leeds had enough ideas in attack to control the game.
